PRISM STAR TRAINING

The PRISM Commitments

Our commitments to learning and care

“Seeing the whole person. Learning with purpose. Improving lives.”

CARE PROVIDERS, FOR CARE PROVIDERS

Our origins shape our commitments.

PRISM grew from developing our own care teams, and our directors continue to lead residential care, domiciliary care and supported living services. That experience keeps our focus on fair value, useful learning and staff development — with dignity, choice and people’s rights at the centre.

We know that training takes staff time, rota planning and cover as well as a course fee. We work with providers to identify relevant learning and make thoughtful use of their budgets.

At PRISM Star Training, we believe learning should make a meaningful difference to people’s lives. These six commitments shape how we teach, how we support learners and the practice we encourage across social care.

1. We put rights, dignity and choice at the heart of care

Every person has the right to be heard, respected and involved in decisions about their life. Our training encourages people to recognise and uphold these rights in everyday practice.

What this means in practice:

  • Supporting people to understand their options and make decisions.
  • Respecting privacy, identity, beliefs and individual preferences.
  • Promoting independence and using the least restrictive approach.
  • Challenging routines or assumptions that limit people’s choice.

2. We seek to understand the whole person

Good care begins with understanding what matters to someone. We encourage curiosity about each person’s strengths, experiences, relationships, communication and support needs.

What this means in practice:

  • Looking beyond a diagnosis, behaviour or immediate task.
  • Considering physical health, emotional wellbeing, sensory needs and past experiences.
  • Recognising people’s abilities, aspirations and existing knowledge.
  • Adapting support to the individual and their circumstances.

3. We act early to promote wellbeing and prevent harm

We help people recognise when support is needed and take thoughtful, timely action. Prevention includes creating the conditions for people to feel safe, stay well and live fulfilling lives.

What this means in practice:

  • Recognising changes in health, wellbeing or communication.
  • Identifying risks and responding to concerns promptly.
  • Planning support that promotes comfort, participation and independence.
  • Balancing safety with people’s choices and opportunities.

4. We build the knowledge, skills and judgement for safe practice

Our training connects evidence and relevant guidance with the realities of social care. We support learners to understand what they are doing, why it matters and when they need further help.

What this means in practice:

  • Using realistic examples, discussion and opportunities to practise.
  • Checking understanding and helping learners apply their knowledge.
  • Recognising the limits of personal competence and seeking support.
  • Taking responsibility for decisions, actions and accurate records.

5. We learn and work through compassion, inclusion and partnership

People learn and receive support best when they feel respected, included and listened to. We bring these qualities into our teaching and encourage them in every professional relationship.

What this means in practice:

  • Creating welcoming learning environments where questions are encouraged.
  • Adapting communication and teaching to different needs.
  • Valuing lived experience and learning from people who receive care.
  • Working with individuals, those important to them and colleagues.

6. We reflect, learn and improve continuously

Learning continues beyond the training room. We encourage people to examine their practice, welcome feedback and turn learning into meaningful change.

What this means in practice:

  • Reflecting on everyday interactions, successes and difficult situations.
  • Discussing mistakes honestly while maintaining accountability.
  • Using feedback and evidence to improve support.
  • Reviewing whether changes make a positive difference to people’s lives.

Our commitment is to learning that strengthens practice—and care that improves lives.
